The Revenge of Shinobi is an action-platformer game developed by 3d6 Games and released in 2002 for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance in western territories. It is completely unrelated to The Revenge of Shinobi on the Mega Drive.
Despite being officially licensed by Sega the game is wholly disconnected from the rest of the Shinobi series, being set in feudal Japan instead of modern times and utilizing 3D rendered graphics. As such it is not considered a canon entry in the series.
Story[]
Long ago, in the Age of Hate, a powerful warlord named Ashira-O ruled the lands. During his time the people rebelled, but the dark warlord's mastery of the elements gave him the strength to crush any resistance. Finally, when times were most dire, five shogun lords joined forces for one last chance to overthrow Ashira-O. With their combined skills they managed to imprison him within five elemental swords.
The shogun returned to the people as heroes, but their fates were about to take ill turns. The weapons began to corrupt their masters, and in time, the cursed shogun fell victim to the very elements they used to entrap the evil Ashira-O. Soon they withdrew from the populace, constructing fortresses and raising forces. Before long, they became worse than the terror they had vanquished, and darkness returned to the land. Armies again proved unable to challenge the elemental shogun. But with a new tactic, that of the invisible ninja, one may be able to steal the elemental swords and free the lands of the curse of Ashira-O. It will take a warrior of exceptional skill, a ninja adept in the ways of stealth, strength and mystic arts.
Shinobi, that ninja is you.
Gameplay[]
The Revenge of Shinobi is a much slower paced game compared to previous entries in the series, with a heavier emphasis on exploration and item collection as well as learning new abilities as the game progresses.
